Web Design

12 years designing web applications

While I have lots of experience in developing websites, my skills are becoming out-of-date and I'm chosing not to keep them updated as I prefer to work on other types of projects. As always, my goal is to be straight forward and honest with potential customers."

Goals

"Simple Elegance"

The purpose of a web site is to convey a message or sell a product. In my opinion too many web sites have too much clutter and fancy gimmicks that can be a distraction. Good web sites have a moderate use of Flash, animation, audio, etc., that enhance the message or product. My goal is to work with the client to develop a simple but elegant web site where the message or the product is the main focus.

Background

I absolutely love designing and developing web sites. For me it is "fun" work. I enjoy seeing out on the web for everyone to see, the results of what my client and I team up to create. I started developing internal web sites for Hewlett Packard 12 years ago. Web development was a lot different back then. I started using Microsoft's Visual Studio Version 1. It didn't work very well, but as an editor it was much better than "Notepad". I have good experience coding web sites that interact with Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Access databases.

I've spent a lot of time studying SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and have a good working knowledge and experience applying those principles. One client I worked with, Limos America, had their Google ranking drop with their keyword search results showing up on pages in the 40's and 50's. I worked with them and got their Google Page Ranking up to a 4 and their keyword searches showing up in the first several pages of Google results. This doesn't happen "over night" as Google takes its time to index a redesigned web site. I explained to Limos America what they needed to do to raise their ranking even higher and we are working on that as time and budget permits.

Google WebMaster and Analytics tools are great because they are free to use. They provide web site registration, analysis of the site and statistic on traffic to the site. This is great information for me and the client, all at no charge to the client. I have studied and worked with Google Adwords (Pay Per Click or PPC), but am by no means an experienced expert at this time.

I've been using Dreamweaver CS3 lately with CSS and find it a great tool for web work. I also test web sites to make sure the pages appear as designed in the four major browsers: Microsoft Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari. Web development can be much more complicated today, but I have family resources that are talented in Photoshop and Flash that work on my team.

I will give clients a "special deal" if they are willing to give me an opportunity to learn something new. I never charge my clients for my learning experiences. If I have to look something up to refresh my memory or figure out how to accomplish the end result, I do that on "my time" not "your time". For instance, I want to learn to use PHP and MySQL which I know will not be difficult with all the other databases and coding languages with which I've had experience. I just haven't had the time, opportunity or need to do so. If a client were to give me that opportunity, not only would they not be charged for my time spent getting up to speed with PHP or MySQL, if I spent three hours applying it to a task for the first time, I would only charge for two hours of work. This can be a "win-win" opportunity for both the client and myself if the client is not under strict deadlines and has a limited budget.
